Memphis, TN – Minor flooding is predicted to impact parts of Mississippi through early Friday, with significant water levels expected along the Buttahatchie and Tombigbee Rivers.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an extended flood warning for the Buttahatchie River near Aberdeen, which is expected to rise to 15.8 feet by Wednesday afternoon, surpassing the 13-foot flood stage. Water is already covering portions of Air Base Road, and low-lying farmland is also flooded. The river will recede below flood stage by Friday morning.
In the Tombigbee River area, flooding is also forecast around Bigbee. The river is expected to crest at 18.1 feet on Wednesday, rising above the 14-foot flood stage. Extensive agricultural flooding is already occurring along Highway 6 near Bigbee. Water is flowing over Hood Road, and the floodplain between Town Creek and the river remains submerged.
The NWS urges residents to take caution when traveling and avoid flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown,” the agency advises, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. For more details and updates, visit weather.gov/memphis.
