Memphis, TN – West Tennessee residents should prepare for the first freeze of the season as temperatures are set to drop below 32°F this Friday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Memphis forecasts the coldest conditions of the fall season to date, with significant freezing potential for areas near Memphis and along the I-40 corridor.
According to the NWS, temperatures Friday and Saturday mornings are expected to dip to 32°F or below in many locations across west Tennessee and northern Mississippi. Frost-sensitive plants and outdoor water lines should be protected to avoid damage. This freeze arrives slightly later than the region’s average first freeze date of Nov. 12.
The current five-day forecast for Memphis anticipates mostly sunny skies leading up to the freeze, with highs in the 70s on Tuesday and a gradual drop to the 50s by Thursday. Friday morning will usher in the coldest air of the week, with lows plummeting to 35°F. A continued chill will persist into Saturday, with temperatures remaining brisk despite sunny conditions.
Key preparation tips include wrapping exposed pipes, covering plants, and ensuring pets are sheltered overnight. Motorists traveling during early morning hours, particularly along I-40, should remain cautious of potential frost patches.
Looking beyond the freeze, conditions will improve by Sunday, with temperatures returning to the low 60s and mostly sunny skies. However, the weekend chill underscores the importance of winterizing homes and vehicles before colder weather settles in for the season.
