Memphis, TN – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of northern Mississippi and central Alabama due to critical fire weather conditions. The warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. CST this evening, with residents urged to avoid outdoor burning and take fire safety precautions.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, northwest Mississippi, including counties such as DeSoto, Marshall, and Lafayette, is experiencing dry conditions with relative humidity as low as 20 percent. Winds are blowing from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph, increasing the risk of rapidly spreading fires.
Similarly, the National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of central Alabama, including Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery counties. The combination of low humidity and wind gusts of up to 20 mph is contributing to dangerous fire conditions.
Officials warn that any fires that develop will spread quickly, making suppression efforts challenging. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are advised to secure flammable materials and remain vigilant.
Fire safety measures include avoiding open flames, properly disposing of cigarette butts, and monitoring local fire restrictions. The warning will expire at 6 p.m. CST, but dry conditions may persist beyond this timeframe. Residents should stay updated on fire weather alerts through local authorities and the National Weather Service.
