St. Paul, Minn. – Severe thunderstorms packing large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes are expected to develop Thursday afternoon and evening, with the highest threat centered in western Wisconsin.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, an Enhanced Risk for severe storms now includes areas from Eau Claire to Rice Lake. Eastern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, sits under a Slight Risk, while western and southern Minnesota face a lower but still notable chance of isolated severe storms. The most dangerous conditions are likely between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday.
Cities such as Hayward, St. Croix Falls, and Red Wing may see hail larger than golf balls and brief tornado spin-ups. Meanwhile, St. Paul, Rochester, and Austin could experience strong wind gusts and brief downpours. On Wednesday night, storms will begin forming over the Dakotas and Nebraska before drifting into Minnesota, though they are expected to weaken overnight.
Residents in affected areas should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and prepare for possible power outages. Non-essential travel Thursday afternoon is discouraged, especially near the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect through late Thursday night. Additional warnings may be issued as storm tracks become clearer.
