Duluth, MN – A winter storm is set to impact northeast Minnesota on Thursday, with heavy snow and gusty winds likely to cause hazardous travel conditions across the region. Residents from the Brainerd Lakes area to the Twin Ports and along the I-35 corridor should prepare for difficult commutes, especially during the morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, snowfall totals are expected to range between 3-6 inches for most areas, with locally higher amounts up to 8 inches near Lake Superior and east-central Minnesota. Snowfall rates could reach up to 0.5 inches per hour between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m., creating slick and snow-covered roadways. Winds gusting up to 25 mph will further reduce visibility, particularly in open areas.
Snow is forecast to begin late Wednesday night, intensifying into Thursday morning before tapering off by late afternoon. Light snow may linger into the evening, impacting the afternoon commute but with lesser intensity. Motorists are urged to allow extra time, check road conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours.
Temperatures will remain cold, with highs near 22°F Thursday and dropping to around 5°F overnight, creating concerns for icy surfaces. Friday will bring sunshine but blustery conditions, with wind chills dipping into the single digits.
Looking ahead, the weekend in Duluth appears quieter, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper teens Saturday and low 20s Sunday. However, forecasters caution that another snow system may develop early next week.
