Albany, NY – Residents in the Capital Region should prepare for a major weather shift heading into the weekend, with rain today giving way to colder temperatures and snow by Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of slippery travel conditions as temperatures plunge and precipitation transitions from rain to snow.

According to the NWS Albany office, light rainfall will move in this evening before tapering off overnight. On Thursday, drier and mostly sunny weather will prevail with a high of 38°F. However, a sharp cold front late Friday will bring snow showers, accumulating up to several inches, particularly in higher elevations and northern areas.

Travelers should exercise caution, especially during Friday’s evening commute. Roads could become slick as temperatures drop into the low 20s, creating conditions ripe for icy patches.

Extended Forecast:

• Thursday: Mostly sunny, high 38°F, light northwest winds.

• Friday: Snow likely in the afternoon, high near 32°F, chance of precipitation 60%.

• Friday Night: Light snow accumulations possible, low 21°F.

• Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a high of 27°F, low near 6°F overnight.

• Sunday: Sunny but frigid, high 18°F.

Residents are urged to prepare for winter conditions by ensuring vehicles are winter-ready and allowing extra travel time on Friday and Saturday.

Stay tuned to local forecasts for updates as weather conditions evolve, and report hazardous conditions or snowfall amounts to the National Weather Service.
