Minneapolis, Minnesota – Life-threatening cold is overwhelming Minnesota as brutal Arctic air sends wind chills to levels capable of causing frostbite in as little as five minutes for anyone outdoors without full protection.

According to the National Weather Service, Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect across much of the state, including the Twin Cities, Duluth, St. Cloud, Rochester, Mankato, and Brainerd. Wind chills are expected to plunge between 40 and 55 below zero late Thursday night into early Friday, with the most severe conditions across northern and central Minnesota.

In Minneapolis and St. Paul, early Friday commuters could encounter wind chills near 45 below, while northern communities including International Falls, Bemidji, and Ely face even more dangerous cold where exposed skin can freeze in just minutes. Emergency officials warn that even brief outdoor exposure, such as clearing snow or warming vehicles, can quickly become dangerous.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary time outdoors, wear multiple layers including face coverings and insulated gloves, and keep pets inside. Water pipes may freeze rapidly, and vehicle batteries are prone to failure in these conditions. Local agencies recommend checking on elderly neighbors and ensuring space heaters are used safely.

Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect through Friday morning, with additional watches extending into the weekend as the Arctic air mass lingers across Minnesota.
