Minneapolis, Minnesota – Blue skies and warming sunshine are taking over the Twin Cities, but this quiet stretch won’t last. The air is turning noticeably warmer, and forecasters are already tracking the next round of thunderstorms that could interrupt travel as the new week begins.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, temperatures will climb to around 89 degrees today under sunny skies with light north winds between 5 and 10 mph. Dry conditions will make for a pleasant afternoon, but the warming trend is only beginning.

The heat continues to build through the weekend. Sunday’s high reaches 91 degrees as south winds return, drawing warmer and more humid air into central Minnesota. Clouds increase late Sunday, and showers with thunderstorms become more likely by evening. Rainfall totals between one-quarter and one-half inch are possible where heavier storms develop.

Meteorologists are also monitoring a more active weather pattern for Monday. A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms accompanies highs near 92 degrees. Some storms across Minnesota could become strong Monday afternoon, according to the Hazardous Weather Outlook, with damaging winds and hail among the primary concerns. Tornado potential appears limited at this time but will continue to be monitored as the system approaches.

If you’re traveling along I-94, I-35W, I-394, Highway 62, or Interstate 494, enjoy the dry weather today but be prepared for changing conditions late Sunday into Monday. Secure loose outdoor furniture before storms arrive, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts if you have outdoor plans.

Behind Monday’s storms, cooler and drier air arrives. Sunshine returns Tuesday with highs around 82 degrees, offering a much more comfortable start to the workweek.

Long-range outlooks suggest above-normal temperatures remain possible later next week, although additional thunderstorm chances return by midweek.
