Minneapolis, MN – A powerful storm system is set to bring severe weather to Minnesota, with thunderstorms expected Friday evening before transitioning to heavy snow and blizzard conditions by Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), southern Minnesota faces a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Friday evening, with damaging winds and large hail possible. The storm will move northeast into western Wisconsin overnight. Strong winds, up to 60 mph, are expected to increase the risk of hazardous travel conditions.
By Saturday morning, rain is forecast to change to snow across western Minnesota, where blizzard warnings are in effect from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central Minnesota is under a winter storm warning from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., while a high wind warning is in place for southern areas from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Record-breaking temperatures were also reported Friday, with highs reaching 75°F in the Twin Cities, surpassing the previous record of 73°F set in 2012. St. Cloud and Eau Claire also set new records.
Residents are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in western Minnesota, where blizzard conditions will make roads dangerous. The NWS advises checking for updates as conditions develop.
