Grand Forks, MN — An Arctic blast will grip Minnesota and eastern North Dakota this week, bringing life-threatening wind chills as low as -50°F. Residents in Grand Forks and surrounding areas are urged to take immediate precautions, especially when traveling along I-29, where blowing snow and extreme cold could create hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday through noon Tuesday. The dangerously low temperatures could cause frostbite on exposed skin in under five minutes. Hypothermia is also a significant risk.
Monday, which marks Washington’s Birthday, will see temperatures drop to a high near -5°F in Grand Forks, with wind chill values plunging to -40°F. Winds up to 23 mph will exacerbate the cold. Conditions will remain harsh through Tuesday, with a high near -2°F and continued frigid winds.
Residents should limit outdoor exposure, wear layered clothing, and ensure pets are sheltered. Travelers on I-29 and other regional roads should carry emergency supplies, including blankets and water. With temperatures remaining below freezing through midweek, preparedness is critical for all.
