Wichita, KS — Kansas residents face a challenging week as a winter storm brings heavy snow and dangerously cold wind chills starting Monday night. Snowfall between 4 to 6 inches is expected in Wichita and surrounding areas, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph, making travel hazardous on major highways like I-135 and I-35.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday night for portions of Central and South Central Kansas. Bitter Arctic air will follow the snow, with wind chills dropping to -25°F from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning, posing risks of frostbite within 30 minutes of exposure.

Residents are advised to delay travel if possible. If travel is necessary, carry emergency supplies including blankets, water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit. Dress in layers, covering exposed skin to prevent frostbite.

Sunny weather is expected Sunday, but conditions will deteriorate by Monday night with snow intensifying into Tuesday. After the storm, subzero wind chills will persist through Thursday. Warmer weather will begin to return by Friday, with highs near 20°F.
