Duluth, Minn. – Dangerous heat and oppressive humidity are pushing temperatures to dangerous levels across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with some communities expected to approach or exceed 100 degrees before a cold front finally begins bringing relief late Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories remain in effect across much of the Northland through Monday, while dangerously hot and muggy conditions continue into Tuesday. The front will move from north to south Tuesday, allowing cooler air to reach far northern Minnesota first before spreading southward.

The hottest conditions are expected across northeastern Minnesota, where highs could reach 102 degrees Monday before remaining in the mid-90s Tuesday. Areas along the I-35 corridor are forecast to reach 96 degrees Monday and Tuesday, while the Brainerd Lakes climb into the mid-90s. Even the normally cooler Twin Ports, North Shore and South Shore will experience highs in the upper 90s Monday, with heat indices nearing 100 degrees.

Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces. Children and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles.

Conditions begin improving from north to south Tuesday as the cold front advances, with temperatures dropping into the 80s by Wednesday across much of the region. Additional heat headlines may remain in effect until the cooler air fully arrives.
