Minnesota Weather Alert conditions bite across Minneapolis–St. Paul this morning as air temperatures sit near 12 degrees and wind chills hover around 1 degree. Breath fogs instantly. Sidewalks crunch underfoot. A few passing flurries could drift through by afternoon, briefly dusting untreated roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, highs reach only 21 degrees with northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. A chance of flurries develops after 9 p.m., and lows fall to 10 degrees. Sunday stays cold with a high near 18 and gusts up to 25 mph before skies partially clear Sunday night. Temperatures then plunge to around 4 degrees by early Monday.
Drivers along I-94, I-35W and Highway 62 should watch for slick patches where light snow sticks to cold pavement. This is prime flash-freeze season. Even minor melting during daylight can refreeze quickly after sunset. Plan extra stopping distance.
Monday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 19. Clouds increase Monday night with lows near 14. A slight chance of snow arrives Tuesday as highs climb to 34. Snow chances continue Tuesday night and Wednesday, with highs near 31.
The gradual warmup into the 30s hints at moderation, and longer-range trends suggest more consistent 30s to low 40s late next week. For now, winter still holds firm across the Twin Cities.
