Grand Forks, North Dakota – Blizzard warnings remain in effect across parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota through 9 PM CST Sunday, with dangerous travel conditions expected across the region.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Grand Forks and Aberdeen, blizzard conditions are developing early Sunday and will persist into the evening hours. Wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph combined with light snowfall are expected to produce whiteout conditions, significantly reducing visibility despite snowfall totals generally limited to one to two inches.
The warning covers large portions of northwest and west central Minnesota, northeast and southeast North Dakota, and northeast South Dakota. Affected areas include the Red River Valley and surrounding counties, with cities such as Grand Forks, Fargo, Moorhead, Devils Lake, Fergus Falls, Thief River Falls, Valley City, Wahpeton, Sisseton, and Milbank included in the warning area.
In west central Minnesota and northeast South Dakota, a Winter Weather Advisory was in effect early Sunday morning before transitioning to a Blizzard Warning by mid-morning. Forecasters warn that blowing and drifting snow will continue even where new snowfall remains minimal, creating what officials describe as ground blizzard conditions.
The National Weather Service warns that travel may become treacherous or impossible, with rapidly changing conditions and visibility dropping below one-quarter mile at times. Strong winds may also cause minor tree damage and scattered power disruptions.
Officials strongly advise delaying all non-emergency travel until conditions improve Sunday night. Motorists who must travel are urged to carry winter survival kits and remain with their vehicles if stranded. Road conditions are available through 511 services in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
