Duluth, MN – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, including Duluth, Grand Marais, and Superior, until noon Tuesday. Wind chills as low as 45 degrees below zero pose severe risks for frostbite and hypothermia.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that areas impacted include Voyageurs National Park, the Boundary Waters, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Tribal lands in the region are also affected, including the Fond du Lac, Red Cliff, and Bad River Reservations.

Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes in these conditions. Residents are urged to wear layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, if venturing outside. Pets and livestock should be kept indoors or provided with proper shelter and water.

The cold temperatures could also lead to ruptured water pipes. Homeowners are advised to wrap exposed pipes or allow them to drip slowly to prevent freezing.

While temperatures will improve slightly by midday, they will remain well below freezing throughout the day. Travelers should prepare for icy conditions and possible delays. Stay updated on local weather alerts as conditions evolve.
