Chicago, IL – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for Kane County and northwest Illinois, including Rockford and Aurora, until noon Tuesday. Wind chills as low as 32 degrees below zero pose serious risks for frostbite and hypothermia.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 10 minutes in these conditions. Counties under the warning include DeKalb, Lake, McHenry, and Winnebago. Temperatures will gradually improve by midday, with wind chills rising above -20°F by early afternoon.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, if venturing outside. To prevent water pipes from freezing, wrap or drain them or allow them to drip slowly.

Pets should be kept indoors, and livestock provided with adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Local officials recommend checking on older neighbors or family members who may need assistance.

While conditions are expected to improve this afternoon, temperatures will remain below freezing. Travelers should exercise caution and prepare for icy roads. Stay updated with weather alerts as conditions evolve.
