Twin Cities, MN – Southern Minnesota is experiencing worsening drought conditions due to a lack of precipitation since late December.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, the dry spell has intensified drought categories across the region. Most of western Wisconsin, southern Minnesota, and parts of central Minnesota now fall under “Moderate Drought” conditions. Some areas outside the Twin Cities remain “Abnormally Dry.”

This dry period aligns with Minnesota’s climatologically driest time of the year. While impacts remain minor, continued dryness could affect soil moisture, water levels, and agriculture as spring approaches.

The U.S. Drought Monitor highlights drought concerns along the I-90 corridor in southern Minnesota and near the South Dakota border. Officials urge residents and farmers to monitor updates and prepare for potential long-term dryness.
