Mankato, MN – Blue Earth County officials are closely monitoring the Rapidan Dam as rising water levels and debris accumulation pose significant risks. The dam has partially failed, diverting the river flow around the west side, causing power outages and potential bridge closures.
According to the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, the dam’s west abutment has been compromised, leading to increased water levels and dangerous currents. Although the dam remains intact for now, authorities have implemented the Rapidan Dam Emergency Action Plan. This includes notifying downstream residents, relevant regulatory agencies, and local authorities about the imminent threat.
The Sheriff’s Office reports that power outages have occurred, and the County Road 33 and County Road 90 bridges are being closely monitored for debris. These bridges may be closed if necessary to ensure public safety.
Public Works and Emergency Management officials emphasize the importance of avoiding all waterways during this critical period. They caution residents about the dangerous currents and advise everyone to stay away from rivers and lakes until the water levels subside. Parents are urged to keep a close watch on their children and prevent them from going near the water.
Mankato, home to approximately 44,000 people, is significantly impacted by the condition of the Rapidan Dam. Blue Earth County, with a population of around 69,000 residents, is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of its community.
