Duluth, MN – An arctic blast will grip northeast Minnesota this week, bringing dangerously cold wind chills and lake effect snow through Friday. Residents in Duluth and surrounding areas are urged to prepare for wind chills as low as -40°F, with frostbite possible in under 10 minutes.

According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday, with an Extreme Cold Watch beginning late Monday night through Tuesday morning. Temperatures will range from -15°F to -25°F, with wind chills making it feel much colder. Lake effect snow is expected to add 2 to 5 inches, particularly in higher elevations near Douglas, Bayfield, and Ashland counties.

Travel on major routes like I-35 and U.S. Highway 2 could be hazardous due to snow and icy conditions. Residents should dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, to avoid exposure. Schools and businesses may face disruptions, and officials urge checking for updates frequently.

This arctic cold snap follows a weekend of light snow and gusty winds, marking one of the harshest stretches of winter weather this season. Additional advisories are expected, and residents should stay informed through the National Weather Service and local authorities.
