Milwaukee, WI – The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to residents about a recent increase in phone scams. Scammers are allegedly impersonating law enforcement officers and threatening arrests if payments are not made, targeting individuals with claims of missed jury duty or other fabricated offenses.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, legitimate law enforcement agencies do not call or email residents with threats of arrest. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that these scammers are using a technique known as “spoofing,” which allows them to disguise their caller ID to appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate source. This tactic has been increasingly used to deceive and frighten residents into making payments.
The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who receives such a call to not engage with the caller and to report the incident immediately. Residents can contact the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office at 414-278-4788 or reach out to local or municipal police departments for assistance. Additional resources include the Social Security Administration Fraud Hotline and the State of Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
The community is encouraged to share this information widely to prevent others from falling victim to these scams. Awareness and vigilance are key to protecting oneself and loved ones from these fraudulent activities.
