St. Cloud, MN – Rain is expected to turn into heavy, blowing snow across much of Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin this afternoon and evening as a potent winter storm moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, the system will bring snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour and powerful northwest winds gusting up to 45 mph. Blizzard-like conditions may develop at times, with visibility dropping to a quarter-mile or less.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect from noon today through Wednesday morning for counties including Stearns, Kandiyohi, Morrison, Benton, Douglas, Todd, and much of the Twin Cities metro area. Snow totals are expected to range from 4 to 7 inches across central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with 2 to 4 inches farther south.

The heaviest snowfall is likely near Morris, St. Cloud, and Princeton, while southern areas such as Mankato, Faribault, and Owatonna may see lighter but still disruptive amounts. Winds will strengthen through the evening, increasing the risk of blowing snow, downed branches, and difficult travel during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare emergency kits for vehicles, and check 511mn.org or 511wi.gov for the latest road updates.
