Billings, Mont. – A widespread and dangerous heat wave is gripping the northern and central Midwest, with record-challenging temperatures stretching from Montana across the Dakotas and into Illinois, creating increasing health risks through the middle of the week.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, a broad corridor of Major to Extreme HeatRisk will remain in place through Wednesday across much of the Intermountain West, Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. The highest risk extends from eastern Montana through North Dakota, South Dakota and portions of Minnesota, while dangerous heat also reaches Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Afternoon temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-90s to 105 degrees, with isolated locations exceeding 110 degrees across the hottest parts of the region.

Cities including Billings, Bismarck, Pierre, Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago are expected to experience multiple days of dangerous heat. Warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief, increasing cumulative heat stress for anyone without access to air conditioning or adequate hydration.

The prolonged heat raises the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for outdoor workers, older adults, young children and those participating in recreational activities. Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink water frequently, wear lightweight clothing and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

The Weather Prediction Center expects dangerous heat to persist through midweek, with above-average temperatures continuing across portions of the Corn Belt into next weekend. Additional heat advisories, excessive heat warnings and local alerts are likely as the event continues to unfold.
