Chicago, IL – The Midwest is set to witness a spectacular celestial show this weekend as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower reaches its peak. From the night of August 11 through the early hours of August 12, skywatchers across the region could see up to 100 meteors per hour, with the possibility of spotting one meteor per minute under ideal conditions. This meteor shower, which originates from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, has been active since mid-July, but the peak nights promise the most dazzling display.

Despite a 53% waxing moon, the best viewing times will be after the moon sets, offering darker skies for meteor spotting. For an optimal viewing experience, Midwesterners should consider heading to dark-sky locations such as the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, Starved Rock State Park, or Wisconsin’s Devil’s Lake State Park.

Be sure to dress warmly, bring a blanket or a comfortable chair, and perhaps a thermos of your favorite hot drink. Gathering with friends and family can make this a memorable night under the stars. With clear skies, you could see up to 100 meteors per hour, making this a must-see event in the Midwest’s expansive skies!
