New York, NY – The East Coast is in for a celestial treat as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks this weekend. From the night of August 11 through the early morning of August 12, residents from Maine to Florida might witness up to 100 meteors per hour, with the potential to see one meteor per minute in ideal conditions. The Perseids, which originate from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, have been visible since mid-July, but the upcoming peak nights are when the real show begins.

While the 53% waxing moon may interfere with visibility, the best viewing times will be after the moon sets, providing darker skies for optimal meteor watching. For the best experience, consider visiting dark-sky locations like New York’s Catskill Mountains, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, or Florida’s Everglades.

Make sure to dress warmly, bring a comfortable chair or blanket, and perhaps some snacks and warm drinks to enjoy during the night. Gathering with friends and family will only enhance the experience. With clear skies, you could see one meteor every minute—an event not to be missed along the East Coast’s scenic landscapes!
