Memphis, TN – Dangerous heat will continue across the Mid-South this weekend, with the National Weather Service issuing a Heat Advisory for much of West Tennessee, North Mississippi, East Arkansas and southeast Missouri as heat index values climb as high as 107 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Sunday for the Memphis metropolitan area and surrounding communities. A separate Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. CDT Saturday for portions of eastern Arkansas, southeast Missouri and northwest Mississippi before another advisory begins Sunday morning.
The advisory includes Memphis, Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville, Millington, Union City, Dyersburg, Brownsville, Humboldt, Ripley, Oakland and Somerville in Tennessee, along with Southaven, Olive Branch, Senatobia and Batesville in Mississippi. Additional affected communities include West Memphis, Jonesboro, Blytheville, Forrest City, Helena-West Helena and Paragould in Arkansas, as well as Kennett and Caruthersville in Missouri.
Forecasters expect afternoon temperatures combined with high humidity to produce heat index values up to 107 degrees, creating conditions that significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Officials also recommend checking on older adults, young children and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.
Anyone working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Health officials warn that heat stroke is a medical emergency and anyone showing symptoms should be moved to a cool place immediately while 911 is contacted.
The National Weather Service advises residents across the Mid-South to monitor the latest forecasts as dangerous heat continues through the weekend.
