Easton, MD – Residents across portions of Maryland’s Eastern Shore and southern Delaware should prepare for another afternoon of dangerous heat, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, heat index values are expected to reach 106 degrees across parts of the Delmarva Peninsula, where high temperatures combined with elevated humidity will create hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

The advisory covers Caroline, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties in Maryland, including the communities of Easton, Centreville and Denton. It also includes Inland Sussex County, Delaware, including Georgetown.

Forecasters warn that the combination of heat and humidity can quickly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, young children, outdoor workers and anyone without access to air conditioning.

Officials recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day, remaining in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours. Anyone who must work or exercise outside should take frequent breaks in shaded or cool locations and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

Residents are also encouraged to check on relatives, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to the extreme heat.

Heat exhaustion can develop after prolonged exposure to high temperatures, while heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical attention. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as confusion, loss of consciousness or a high body temperature should be moved to a cooler location, and 911 should be called immediately.

The National Weather Service advises residents across the affected areas to continue monitoring local forecasts and practice heat safety until the advisory expires at 8 p.m. EDT Saturday.
