Carbondale, Illinois – A tornado watch remains in effect across southern Illinois and the Mid-South through 11 p.m. Monday, with storms capable of cutting power, blocking highways, and rapidly escalating into tornado warnings within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service, Tornado Watch 162 covers parts of southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, northeast Arkansas, and western Tennessee, with conditions favorable for tornadoes and damaging winds through late evening.

In southern Illinois, counties including Jackson, Williamson, Franklin, and Union are under the watch, impacting Carbondale, Marion, and Murphysboro. Southeast Missouri counties such as Cape Girardeau, Scott, and New Madrid are also included. The threat extends into Memphis, Dyersburg, Paducah, and Evansville, placing major routes like I-57, I-55, and I-24 at risk for sudden closures due to debris, flash flooding, or near-zero visibility. Wind gusts may exceed 60 mph, and isolated tornadoes can develop quickly along storm lines.

Residents should avoid travel this evening, secure loose outdoor items, and move to interior rooms away from windows if warnings are issued. Charge phones and prepare for outages, as storms may intensify after sunset when visibility drops.

The tornado watch remains active until 11 p.m., with additional warnings likely as storms track east. Updates are expected frequently as radar conditions evolve across the region.
