Springfield, IL – Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of central Illinois Tuesday as warm, humid conditions continue ahead of a cooler stretch expected through the remainder of the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue into Tuesday evening, with the strongest storms most likely east of the Illinois River and south of Interstate 72. Forecasters warned some storms could produce damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Tuesday highs are expected to climb into the low 70s to low 80s across much of central Illinois before cooler air filters into the region overnight. Rain chances remain elevated through Tuesday night, with lingering showers possible south of Interstate 70 into Wednesday morning.
Dryer and more seasonable weather is then expected Wednesday through Thursday, with daytime highs generally ranging from the upper 60s to low 70s. Overnight lows could dip into the mid-40s in some locations Wednesday night under partly cloudy skies.
Forecasters said another active weather pattern is expected to return Friday into Saturday, bringing renewed chances for showers and thunderstorms across the state. Rain chances Friday could reach 70% to 90% in some areas, according to the latest forecast outlook.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions Tuesday afternoon and evening, especially in areas east of the Illinois River where stronger storms are most likely to develop.
