Memphis, TN – Dangerous heat and scattered thunderstorms could combine to make Wednesday a challenging day for outdoor plans across the Mid-South. Temperatures will climb into the low 90s, but the National Weather Service warns the heat index could reach 105 degrees before storms roll in during the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the highest risk for heavy downpours and frequent lightning in Shelby County and surrounding areas. Calm winds will become southwest at 5 mph, potentially shifting storm cells quickly across the metro.
Drivers should be prepared for brief but intense rain that could reduce visibility on key routes like I-40, I-55, and U.S. 78. Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, and residents should check on vulnerable neighbors during the peak heat hours.
While heat and storm chances decrease slightly Thursday, another round of scattered storms is possible into Friday before drier, hotter weather arrives for the weekend.
