Memphis, Tennessee – Much of the Mid-South is enjoying noticeably cooler weather today behind a passing cold front, but dangerous heat remains locked across southern portions of the region where a Heat Advisory is in effect through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the cold front has pushed south of the Tennessee-Mississippi state line and is expected to stall, keeping the hottest air focused across northern Mississippi and nearby areas. A Heat Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. for portions of the southern Mid-South, where heat index values are expected to exceed 105 degrees.
Communities near Memphis will notice a significant difference compared to Tuesday, with lower humidity and cooler afternoon temperatures across much of west Tennessee, eastern Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel. However, locations farther south, including portions of northern Mississippi, such as Clarksdale, Oxford, Tupelo, Aberdeen and surrounding communities, will continue to experience oppressive heat capable of causing heat-related illness.
Residents in the advisory area should limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
The National Weather Service expects the cooler pattern to persist across much of the Mid-South through the remainder of the workweek before temperatures gradually warm again this weekend. Additional Heat Advisories may be issued if the stalled front remains south of the region and dangerous heat persists.
