Chicago, Illinois – Beachgoers along southern Lake Michigan are being urged to stay out of the water today as dangerous waves and life-threatening currents create hazardous conditions, even as comfortable temperatures and dry weather continue across northern Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a High Swim Risk is in effect today for Lake Michigan beaches in Illinois and northwest Indiana, with dangerous waves reaching up to 9 feet. The hazardous conditions are expected to continue through the day and persist into tonight for Indiana beaches. Strong currents and rough surf will create dangerous conditions for swimmers and challenging conditions for small watercraft.
Officials advise residents and visitors to stay out of the water, obey posted beach closures and warning flags, and avoid piers, breakwalls and lakeshore trails where large waves can unexpectedly sweep people into the lake.
Away from the shoreline, northern Illinois will enjoy another comfortably cool summer day with highs ranging from 70 to 74 degrees under partly sunny skies. Dry weather is expected to continue through the end of the workweek as temperatures gradually warm, reaching 75 to 79 degrees Thursday, 77 to 81 degrees Friday and 81 to 86 degrees Saturday.
The warming trend accelerates by Sunday, when highs are forecast to reach 88 to 92 degrees, marking the return of summer heat across the Chicago metropolitan area and surrounding communities.
Residents planning beach trips should postpone swimming until conditions improve, while those with weekend outdoor plans can expect a return to much warmer weather. Additional beach hazard statements may be issued if dangerous wave conditions persist.
