Oakland, MD – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the high terrain of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and western Virginia, where a light but impactful mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore/Washington.
The advisory is in effect from 3 AM to noon Sunday and includes Garrett County in Maryland; western Grant, western Mineral, and western Pendleton Counties in West Virginia; and Highland, Augusta, and Nelson Counties in Virginia—including the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Forecasters expect up to one inch of snow and sleet combined, along with a light glaze of ice. While amounts are minor, even a thin coating of ice can lead to slippery roads, particularly on curves, hills, and shaded mountain passes. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, increasing the risk of scattered slick spots as precipitation transitions between snow and freezing drizzle.
The timing of the wintry mix—just before daybreak—means drivers heading out early Sunday should prepare for icy patches on elevated and untreated surfaces. Commuters and travelers along US-33, US-250, I-64, and Blue Ridge parkway routes should expect changing conditions with elevation.
NWS urges motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and monitor local weather and road updates through 511. By midday Sunday, temperatures should rise enough to end icing concerns.
Residents in high-elevation communities are encouraged to use caution when walking on driveways, steps, or decks, which may become slick.
