Cumberland, MD – The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has issued a Wind Advisory for much of the western Mid-Atlantic, where strong winds are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the overnight hours.
The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 1 a.m. Thursday, covering western Maryland, central and western Virginia, and eastern West Virginia, including the Allegany Mountains, Blue Ridge, and Highland counties.
Forecasters predict west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, capable of downing tree limbs, damaging power lines, and causing localized power outages. Travel may also be difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially along mountain passes such as U.S. Route 48 and the I-68 corridor.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid parking under trees, and use caution while driving, particularly in open or elevated areas. Winds are expected to diminish early Thursday morning as the front moves east.
