Harrisburg, PA – A prolonged stretch of dangerously cold Arctic air continues across the Mid-Atlantic, with extreme cold expected to persist through Sunday, February 2, affecting communities from Pennsylvania through Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, much-below-normal temperatures will remain locked in across Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the single digits and teens, with colder conditions in higher elevations and rural areas. Wind chills may drop into the single digits or below zero, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

Forecasters say repeated surges of Arctic air are preventing meaningful warming, extending what has already become one of the coldest stretches of the winter season for the region. Daytime highs are expected to remain in the 20s and low 30s, offering limited relief even during peak afternoon hours.

Another reinforcing push of Arctic air is expected late Friday into Saturday, keeping the cold firmly in place through the weekend. While parts of southern Virginia may briefly approach seasonal averages during the day, nighttime temperatures will continue to pose risks for frozen pipes, power demand, and cold-related illness.

State and local officials across the Mid-Atlantic are urging residents to take precautions, including insulating exposed pipes, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring adequate heating. Emergency management agencies also stress the importance of checking on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without reliable heat.

Motorists are advised to keep winter emergency supplies in their vehicles and remain alert for icy conditions during early morning commutes.
