Washington, D.C. – Sweltering heat and scattered thunderstorms are set to shape the weekend across the Mid-Atlantic, with temperatures climbing into the mid-90s in urban areas by Sunday. Drivers along I-81 and I-95 could encounter slowdowns from scattered storms as the weekend closes.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, Saturday will stay warm and mostly sunny with highs reaching 86 to 92 degrees in urban and bay communities, while mountain towns will top out in the low 80s. Storms are expected to remain isolated, largely west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
By Sunday, conditions turn hotter and more humid, with highs from 89 to 95 degrees around Washington, Baltimore, and Annapolis. Thunderstorm chances increase to 40 percent, with storms developing west of I-81 but possibly spilling east toward I-95 into the evening. A cold front moving through late Sunday will bring additional showers and briefly lower humidity heading into the new week.
Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and be alert for sudden downpours and lightning, especially if traveling west.
More advisories may be issued Sunday as storms strengthen with the cold front.
