Marquette, MI – Residents in Gogebic County are preparing for significant snowfall starting tonight, with up to 6 inches forecasted. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 6 p.m. this evening to 6 a.m. Tuesday, warning of hazardous travel conditions.
According to the NWS, lake effect snow will primarily affect areas north of Ironwood and Wakefield, with lighter accumulation expected east of Wakefield. Slippery roads are anticipated during Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Authorities recommend slowing down, leaving extra travel time, and using extreme caution on Highway 2 and local roads.
The snow is part of a cold front sweeping the Upper Peninsula this week. After the advisory period ends Tuesday morning, lake effect snow may persist through midweek, though totals will taper off. Highs will hover in the low 20s, with wind chills making it feel even colder.
Looking ahead, the region should brace for a second round of snow late Thursday into Friday. Early models suggest additional accumulations, making weekend travel potentially challenging.
Residents are encouraged to stock up on essentials and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Stay tuned to local updates and check road conditions before traveling. For the latest weather and safety updates, visit weather.gov.
