Gaylord, MI – Freezing rain is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across portions of northern Michigan through Tuesday morning, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 7 a.m. EST.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, freezing rain will result in ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch. Affected areas include Antrim, Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Missaukee, Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, as well as Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Otsego, Montmorency, Alpena, Alcona, Mackinac Island, and Bois Blanc Island. Additional counties under advisory until 10 a.m. include Central Chippewa, Eastern Mackinac, Southeast Chippewa, Western Chippewa, and Western Mackinac.
Motorists should prepare for slippery roads, sidewalks, and bridges, which could make the Tuesday morning commute treacherous. The National Weather Service urges drivers to slow down and exercise caution while traveling.
Although ice accumulation is expected to remain relatively light, even minor glazing can create dangerous conditions, particularly on untreated surfaces. Elevated roadways, such as bridges and overpasses, will be particularly vulnerable to icing.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and allow extra travel time for morning commutes. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing, which could prolong icy conditions in some areas before improving later in the day.
