Grand Rapids, MI – A winter storm warning remains in effect for portions of lower Michigan through early Friday morning, bringing significant snowfall and dangerous travel conditions. Snow accumulations are expected to reach up to 8 inches in areas near and west of US-131, with gusty winds of up to 45 mph creating near-zero visibility at times.
According to the National Weather Service, lake-effect snow bands will continue through today, with the heaviest snow occurring near the lakeshore. Roads, including US-131 and Highway 127, are expected to remain slippery and treacherous due to blowing and drifting snow. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and prepare for sudden changes in visibility.
Temperatures will stay below freezing, with a high of 31 degrees expected this afternoon. Snow showers are likely to taper off tonight, but icy conditions will persist as overnight lows dip to 20 degrees.
Looking ahead, Friday brings a mix of snow showers and gusty winds, with an additional 2 inches of accumulation possible. Saturday will offer a brief respite with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 36 degrees, while Sunday turns slightly warmer with highs approaching 45 degrees and a chance of mixed precipitation.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and delay travel if conditions worsen. Ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits, including flashlights, food, and water.
Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the weekend, and stay informed of updates by following the National Weather Service.
