Marquette, MI – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula starting early Friday, bringing up to 12 inches of snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday for Keweenaw, Alger, Luce, and Northern Schoolcraft counties. Snow accumulations could reach 5 to 12 inches, with the heaviest snowfall expected along US-41 from Phoenix to Delaware. Winds up to 45 mph could cause blowing snow and reduced visibility.

In Chippewa and Mackinac counties, snowfall totals of 6 to 10 inches are expected, with treacherous road conditions likely on bridges and overpasses. Power outages are possible due to heavy snow weighing down tree limbs.

Travel is strongly discouraged, especially during the Friday morning and evening commutes. Officials urge residents to carry emergency supplies in vehicles, including flashlights, food, and water. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should allow extra time, maintain safe distances, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.

Authorities also advise residents to report downed power lines and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve by Saturday morning.
