Gaylord, MI – A winter storm is set to impact parts of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula from late Thursday night through Friday night, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord and Marquette, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for multiple counties, including Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Chippewa, Mackinac, Alger, Luce, and Schoolcraft. Snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are possible, with the heaviest snowfall expected throughout the day Friday. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow and reducing visibility to below a quarter-mile at times.
The storm will impact both morning and evening commutes on Friday. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, allow extra travel time, and prepare for sudden changes in visibility. Roads will likely become slick and difficult to navigate, especially in areas north of M-94, where snowfall totals are expected to be higher.
Residents are advised to delay unnecessary travel and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. The NWS recommends monitoring updated forecasts as conditions develop.
For those who must travel, authorities suggest reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and carrying an emergency kit. The storm is expected to taper off late Friday night.
