Boston, MA – Snow and pockets of freezing rain are creating hazardous road conditions across western and central Massachusetts, as well as parts of New York and Vermont, this morning. Motorists are urged to drive with caution as slippery travel conditions persist until temperatures rise above freezing later today.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, snow began spreading across the region early Thursday morning before transitioning to rain between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. A coating to an inch of snow is expected in most areas, with up to 2 inches possible in the Berkshires. In higher elevations, temperatures are hovering near 32 degrees, allowing for the potential of freezing rain before the changeover to rain.

The National Weather Service in Albany issued a similar statement for the Berkshires, southern Vermont, and eastern New York, warning of a light snow accumulation followed by a glaze of ice from freezing rain. These conditions are expected to impact the morning commute, making roads slick and hazardous.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel and reduce speeds, particularly in higher elevations where icy conditions may persist longer. Temperatures are expected to rise later in the morning, improving travel conditions as precipitation turns to rain.
