Grand Rapids, Mich. – Dry air, gusty winds, and rising temperatures are creating dangerous wildfire conditions across much of western Michigan today, prompting officials to urge residents to avoid activities that could spark flames.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, an elevated wildfire danger is in effect through Monday evening as temperatures climb to 80°F, humidity drops as low as 25%, and winds gust up to 20 mph out of the southwest. These conditions, combined, make it easier for small fires to ignite and spread quickly—especially in grassy or wooded areas.

Counties including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Allegan are most at risk. Residents are asked to delay any outdoor burning, avoid using grills or chainsaws near dry vegetation, and secure trailer chains that could cause sparks along roadways. All-terrain vehicles and smoking materials also pose a heightened danger.

“Check your local restrictions before lighting any fire, and avoid unnecessary risk,” NWS officials said.

While no statewide burn ban is in effect, local agencies may implement temporary restrictions. Elevated fire conditions are expected to ease overnight, but officials warn that similar patterns may return later in the week.
