Marquette, Michigan – Dry air and gusty winds are creating critical fire weather conditions across western Upper Michigan today, triggering a Red Flag Warning for several inland counties through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, counties highlighted in red—including Marquette, Iron, Baraga, and Dickinson—face “dangerous wildfire conditions” with relative humidity dropping below 25% and wind gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph. Meanwhile, elevated fire weather conditions are possible across eastern U.P. counties like Chippewa and Luce.

Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, including campfires, brush piles, or open flames, as fires could spread quickly under these conditions. Officials stress the importance of discarding cigarettes properly and avoiding sparks from equipment or vehicles on dry grass.

Local burn permits are suspended today, and fire crews remain on high alert. This marks the first significant fire risk of the summer season in the U.P., where dry spells have become more common in recent years.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until sunset. More alerts may be issued if conditions persist.
