Saginaw, MI – Roads across Mid-Michigan could turn icy within hours Tuesday night as freezing rain develops by 8 p.m., creating slippery conditions that may disrupt the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday for Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, and Tuscola counties. Forecasters expect freezing rain capable of producing up to 0.10 inches of ice, enough to coat untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges.
The highest travel impacts are expected overnight into the early commute, particularly in Saginaw, Midland, Bay City, Caro, and Bad Axe. Ice accumulation may make stretches of I-75, US-10, and M-25 slick, especially on elevated surfaces such as overpasses and rural highways in the Thumb region.
Local emergency officials warn that even light ice accumulation can create widespread hazards. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time Wednesday morning. Residents should also watch for icy steps, sidewalks, and driveways, which may increase the risk of falls.
Isolated power outages cannot be ruled out if ice begins to accumulate on tree limbs and power lines overnight.
Freezing rain is expected to taper later Wednesday morning, but slick conditions could linger into the late morning hours as temperatures slowly rise. Additional advisories may be issued if icing becomes heavier overnight.
