Rhinelander, WI – Roads across northern Wisconsin could turn slick within hours Tuesday afternoon as a burst of snow and light icing begins around the evening commute, bringing up to 5 inches of accumulation and creating hazardous travel into Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 4 p.m. Tuesday and continues until 1 p.m. Wednesday for Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Langlade, Lincoln, and northern Marinette counties. Snow totals are expected to reach 3 to 5 inches, with a brief period of mixed precipitation capable of producing a light glaze of ice on untreated surfaces.
Cities including Rhinelander, Eagle River, Antigo, Merrill, Tomahawk, Crandon, Niagara, and Aurora are likely to see deteriorating road conditions during the Tuesday evening commute. Snow-covered pavement and icy patches could impact travel along U.S. Highway 51, Highway 45, and rural county roads across the Northwoods.
WisDOT officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions by dialing 511 before traveling. Bridges and overpasses may freeze first as temperatures hover near the freezing mark overnight.
Snow is expected to continue through early Wednesday before tapering late in the morning. Additional updates or advisories may be issued if snowfall rates increase overnight.
