Gaylord, MI – Intense lake-effect snow bands and strong winds are expected to make travel dangerous across northern Michigan through Friday, with rapid visibility drops and fresh accumulations hitting major corridors during the busy holiday period. The most widespread travel problems will occur late Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, followed by localized whiteouts Thursday afternoon and Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Alpena, Southeast Chippewa, and Oscoda Counties through 7 p.m. Friday. Forecasters expect 2 to 7 inches of accumulation in most areas, with localized higher totals near the Presque Isle lakeshore and southern Emmet and Cheboygan Counties. According to meteorologists, winds could gust 40 to 45 mph at times, pushing blowing snow across stretches of US-131, I-75, and M-32.
According to Michigan State Police and county road commissions, visibility may collapse within minutes under the strongest lake-effect bands, especially north and east of Gaylord and near Drummond Island. Rural corridors and open farmland will see the most drifting, with bridges and overpasses icing earlier than main pavement.
Drivers should slow down, keep headlights on, and expect rapidly changing conditions with each passing snow band. Pack winter gear, keep phones charged, and plan extra travel time Thursday and Friday. Conditions will improve Friday evening as winds weaken and banding breaks apart.
