Grand Rapids, MI – A persistent burst of lake-enhanced snow and strong winds is set to keep travel difficult across central and south-central Michigan through Thursday, with slick roads and quickly shifting visibility expected during peak commuter hours. The prolonged event will lean on gusty winds to keep snow blowing across roadways, especially in exposed stretches.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for Clare, Isabella, Montcalm, Ionia, Eaton, and Jackson Counties. Additional accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are anticipated. According to forecasters, winds could gust as high as 45 mph, creating pockets of blowing snow along US-127, I-96, and elevated overpasses where conditions deteriorate fastest. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, bridges may ice earlier than main pavement due to wind exposure.
Lake-effect banding will cause rapid shifts between heavy snow bursts and clearer stretches over short distances. Drivers traveling between Mount Pleasant, Greenville, Ionia, and Jackson may encounter sudden drops in visibility, especially during the overnight and morning commute periods. Rural corridors could see the sharpest impacts as winds funnel across open farmland.
Residents should slow down, allow extra travel time, and prepare for sudden changes in road texture as drifting snow rebuilds after plow passes. Keep phones charged, clear vehicle sensors, and stay aware of wind-driven impacts on high-profile vehicles. Conditions will gradually ease Thursday evening as winds weaken and banding breaks apart.
