Michigan – Headlights cut through low fog along Lake Superior this morning as cold air hugs the shoreline. The pavement feels slick in spots, and winter isn’t finished yet.
Patchy fog lingers early, especially near the lakeshore and low-lying roads. Temperatures start in the upper 20s, keeping a freeze in place. Conditions improve late this morning as clouds thin and highs reach the mid-30s. Even so, shaded roads may stay icy longer than expected.
According to the National Weather Service, quieter weather holds through today and much of Thursday. Skies turn partly sunny, and highs approach the upper 30s. Travel remains manageable for now, but the next system is already lining up.
Rain and snow showers develop Thursday evening, first as light rain, then mixing with snow as temperatures slip closer to freezing. Winds increase, with gusts over 20 mph possible. Slushy patches may form on untreated roads, especially late at night and early Friday.
Friday brings on-and-off snow showers, possibly mixed with rain early. Highs hover in the mid-30s, but colder air slowly works in. Roads could turn slick again as daytime melting refreezes after sunset. Drivers should watch bridges and hills closely.
By Saturday, Winter tightens its grip. Snow showers become more likely through the day, with temperatures stuck near 29 degrees. Visibility may drop quickly during heavier bursts, especially on US-41 and nearby county roads. While accumulations appear modest, repeated snow showers can still create hazardous travel.
Saturday night stays cold, with lows near 20. Any daytime melting may flash freeze, increasing black ice risk. Sunday remains mostly cloudy and cold, with highs in the mid-20s and lingering snow showers possible.
More cold follows early next week as January 2026 daylight slowly increases.
