Michigan — Snowflakes drift across dark pavement this morning in the central Upper Peninsula, carried sideways by a steady northwest wind. Headlights glow through fine snow, and the cold bites exposed skin within minutes.

Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for Marquette and much of the central and western Upper Peninsula. Lake-effect snow will continue through tonight, with widespread totals of 3 to 6 inches and locally higher amounts approaching 9 inches under persistent bands. Accumulations will vary sharply by location.

Roads are already slick, and visibility will drop quickly when heavier snow bands pass. Travel along US-41 and nearby county roads may become difficult at times. Drivers should plan extra time and expect rapidly changing conditions.

Temperatures remain locked in the low teens today. Wind chills dip into the negative single digits and teens, especially after sunset. That cold carries into New Year’s Day 2026, with bitter wind chills lingering through the morning hours.

Snow continues in waves into Thursday night, with lighter chances Friday. Even brief daytime melting may refreeze quickly after dark, creating black ice. Pedestrians should use caution on untreated sidewalks and parking lots.

By Friday, skies turn partly sunny, but cold air holds firm. Highs struggle to reach the upper teens. The first weekend of 2026 stays wintry. Saturday brings additional snow chances with highs near 19, while Sunday trends slightly milder but still snowy at times.

Meteorologists continue tracking shifting lake-effect bands that could bring sudden bursts of snow and reduced visibility.

If you’re traveling for New Year’s celebrations, keep winter gear in your vehicle and monitor local alerts closely.
