Michigan’s first morning of March greets Detroit with a sharp bite in the air and bright sun glinting off dry pavement. Thermometers sit near 17 degrees at mid-morning, and wind chills hover in the single digits. Anyone heading out now feels that late-winter sting immediately.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, sunshine will push highs near 30 degrees this afternoon with light north winds. Clear skies and calm conditions will keep roads dry today, but temperatures drop back into the upper teens tonight.

Monday turns milder, with highs climbing to the mid-30s under sun. Clouds thicken late, and rain develops Monday night with temperatures near 28 degrees. That puts Metro Detroit close to the freezing mark. A brief rain and freezing rain mix cannot be ruled out toward Tuesday morning, especially on bridges and overpasses along I-75 and I-94. Plan extra time for the Tuesday commute.

Rain becomes likely Tuesday with highs near 42 degrees and an 80% chance of measurable rainfall. Periods of rain linger into Wednesday with highs near 50. Wet pavement by day and lows in the 30s at night raise a flash-freeze concern midweek if skies partially clear. Watch for slick patches after sunset.

By Thursday and Friday, temperatures surge into the 50s and near 60 by Friday. That’s a true March warm spell and a preview of spring warmth ahead. Clocks spring forward next Sunday at 2 a.m., and Detroit will gain nearly 90 extra minutes of daylight this month.

Longer-range signals point to above-normal temperatures late next week. Traveling around Metro Detroit? Let us know if you spot slick spots or early signs of spring in your neighborhood.
